Why I Love Reportage

Generations | Reportage Wedding Photographer Somerset

When photographing weddings, I'm looking for moments just like this. This is the type of photo that is going to mean more than any elaborate photo of wedding rings or a staged group photo of guests jumping, these are the real moments between family that are going to be treasured for years to come.

This image was shot at the amazing Maunsel House in Somerset, one of the more interesting wedding venues in the South-West.

One Image, Three Perspectives | Tortworth Court Wedding Photography

Here is a series of three images taken in quick succession during the wedding ceremony. Although the bride and groom are most certainly the focus of attention, there are so many characters and emotions surrounding them that it is important for any documentary wedding photographer to capture the full story of the day by not just focusing on the couple.

I like all three pictures on their own, but presenting them together tells so much more about how important this day really is for everyone.

Tortworth Court Wedding Photographer | Pre-Visualization in Reportage Wedding Photography

Reportage wedding photography is not just passively capturing moments as they unfold. Besides capturing the decisive moment itself, a good documentary wedding photographer is always looking out for clean backgrounds, good light, and funny/interesting compositions as well. The photo below is a good example of pre-visualization in wedding photography. I saw the painting early on in the day and thought it would make a great element in a picture. I needed someone in the frame with a hat to sit in the chair next to the painting. A big ask, I know, but this was a hat-tastic wedding at Tortworth Court, near Bristol, so I figured the odds were half decent. I had the final image of what I wanted to achieve and logged it alongside my other pre-planned images. But, being a reportage wedding photographer, I didn't want to ask someone to sit there and pose for me as it wouldn't be natural or a true recording of the day. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. Move on to the next shot. I did manage to photograph a few wedding guests near the painting, but they weren't wearing hats so didn't quite work for me. At the very end of the evening, it finally came together and with this frame I got the shot I was after (I even got the colours matching with the cat!).

For photographers: it was dark! Image taken on Nikon D750 at ISO 12800. Incredible camera for low-light photography!

Reportage Wedding Photography South West | Cute Outfits For Children at Weddings

Different perspectives. As a reportage wedding photographer in the South West, I try to photograph weddings from different perspectives - high, low, near, far - so that my wedding clients get unique, creative pictures telling the story of the day. I also don't focus on just the bride and groom all day because there are so many stories to be told and images to be captured of your friends and family as well. In this case, getting down and up close to these two page boys, wearing some cute children's wedding outfits. By getting down low and up close, shooting from their perspective, it puts the viewer in the driver's seat allowing them to be more immersed in the moment, which I think makes for some of the best wedding photography.
